The Hatchery
Rare Breeds and Curated Egg Colors from Our New Hampshire Farm.
At White Barn Farm & Apiary, we raise carefully selected heritage and rare poultry breeds known for their beauty, temperament, remarkable egg colors and distinctive breeds you won't find everywhere. Our breeding program focuses on strong genetics, vibrant eggs baskets, and birds that bring both purpose and magic to the farm.
Our Breeding Lines
Our flocks are carefully selected, each breed in our program plays a role in creating the vibrant egg baskets and gorgeously colored and patterned birds we are known for. Through thoughtful pairing and long-term selection, we maintain both purebred lines and curated crosses designed for distinctive eggs and strong, beautiful birds.
All of the purebred blue egg laying lines we offer have been tested for the blue egg gene are are double carriers / homozygous [O/O]. And our Cream Legbar flock has tested negative for the recessive white gene.
Ayam Cemani
Jet black from feather to bone, the Ayam Cemani is one of the most striking chickens in the world. Our breeding program focuses on maintaining the deep fibromelanistic traits that make this rare Indonesian breed so sought after. We mostly use our AC flock for fibro crosses, with limited offerings otherwise as we are also working on body type and moving closer to the proposed SOP (standard of perfection) for this breed.
Black Copper Marans
Known for their deep chocolate-colored eggs, Black Copper Marans bring richness and depth to the egg basket. Our birds are selected for dark egg color, some for dark egg color with speckling, strong body type, and the classic feather coloration of the breed. We are very mindful of SOP (standard of perfection) for this breed, but we do focus a tad more on deep egg color in this flock.
Whiting True Blue
One of the most dependable blue egg layers we breed. They were developed by Dr. Tom Whiting in the 1990s and were primarily bred for consistent, high-volume production of large, bright blue eggs. He was also a fly fishing enthusiast and bred for varying feather type and color. We are breeding for beautiful feather colors (focusing a bit on barred birds) and vibrant blue eggs. Our entire breeding flock has been tested for the blue egg gene and are homozygous (O/O, carry 2 copies of the gene).
Silverudd's Blue
Formerly known as Isbar/Blue Isbar, Silverudd's Blue are a rare Swedish breed known to lay light green eggs, often with speckles. They are on the smaller side compared to some breeds, have a great personality and are very hardy. We breed for eggs that are more consistently green, often with gorgeous speckles. They come in blue, black and splash feathering, and we breed for all three, with a focus on vibrant splash birds and ensuring genetic diversity in our flock. We have tested our entire flock for the blue egg gene and the entire flock is homozygous (O/O).
Cream Legbar
Another dependable blue egg laying breed and has the added benefit of being an autosexing breed, meaning you can tell males from females when they hatch. They are an important part of our breeding program, as they can be used both for olive egger reasons and to create sex-linked chicks (also sexable at hatch but that does not breed forward in the next generation like autosexing does).
Our entire Cream Legbar flock has tested homozygous (O/O) for the blue egg gene and negative for the recessive white gene (an issue popping up in cream legbar flocks).
Welsummer
Our Welsummers are a gorgeous line of heritage layers known for their rich brown feathers with golden hyighlights and deep brown eggs with unique and at times heavy speckling. They are calm, curious and friendly and are productive layers that do not often go broody. They are one of our favorite breeds on the farm and we often use them to backcross olive eggers for deeper green and speckly eggs. Good lines that do not come from big hatcheries that are diluting the egg color and beauty of this breed are hard to find. These are our dependable deep and speckly brown egg layers.
Curated, Intentional Crosses
As well as working on some deep olive eggers and speckled olive eggers, we are also working some other intentional crosses with our Ayam Cemani for fibromelanistic crosses like our FibroRudd (ayam cemani x silverudd's) and our frizzles for a 50% chance of frizzled feathers (lay blue and green). A few sex-linked crosses (sexable at hatch): Ice Cream Bars (silverudd's x cream legabar), MarsBars (BCM x cream legbar) and some really speckled and gorgeously feathered olive egger mixes.
